Play of Gravity:
My artworks integrate the assembly of, and participation with, publicly-accessible sculpture at multiple locations. They require viewers to engage the work viscerally, so that they physically become part of the art. An important aspect to my art-making philosophy is to create an instant parallel world where happiness, ease and freedom coexist. For a few moments, my work interrupts day-to-day life to transport you to a joyful place in the public realm.

This project, entitled Play of Gravity, is formatted as playground equipment and created for grownups. Play of Gravity is for big kids. And to encourage older people to join, I say: “Not for young children under 40”. (Although all ages are welcome.)

There are three main aspects to Play of Gravity: Gravity, Assembly and Portability.

Gravity:
In Japanese Kanji, ‘weight’ and ‘power’ together are read as ‘gravity’. When ‘weight’ and ‘power’ are combined into one character, it reads as ‘move’. Playground equipment moves according to the laws of gravity. My artwork is inspired by the simplicity of movement affected by these laws, whereby participants find harmony between physical strength, mindfulness and the specific natural conditions of their surroundings.

Assembly:
I describe the visual language of my work with the term ‘Pure and Clever’. The pureness originates from the direct relationship between function and form. The cleverness is in the simplicity that allows each piece to be easily and playfully assembled and reassembled, over and over again.

Portability:
The sculpture’s modular configuration allows them to be brought to forests, a sandy beach, along a mountain road, on building rooftops. This portability affords an endless variety of experiences at different times of the day, seasons of the year, in addition to other variables such as weather conditions and so on. Each factor contributes to a unique landscape, which is essential to Play of Gravity.

昭和の遊具
昭和50年代に私が通っていた小学校の運動場には、今思い出してみると心底ゾッとする様な、子供にとってかなり危険な遊具が数多くありました。特に「空中シーソー/回転シーソー」は体が宙に浮いたまま飛ばされそうになったり、物凄いスピードで回転して暫く止まらなくなったり…遊んだ後は目眩を起こして真っ直ぐ歩けなくなる程でした。ひょっとすると大人には更に危険、もしくは不可能な遊びだったのかも知れません。それでも私は、そんな遊具で遊ぶのが大好きでした。私と同年代の日本人ならきっと、似た様な経験があるのではないでしょうか？現在ではその頃の型の遊具は、安全性の都合か時代性の都合かで撤去されていて、見かける事はありません。

大切な事
もし偶然通りかかった公園に誰一人いなかった時、「ほんの少しだけ遊ぶ？」という誘惑に駆られる事はありませんか？しかしながら子供用の遊具に体を縮こめて遊んでも全然楽しくありませんし、「大人が遊具で遊ぶべきでは無い」という（架空か実在かは別として）ラベルが貼られています。そこで私は大人が遊ぶべきの大人サイズの遊具を製作し始めました。年齢に関わらず、体を自由自在に動かして『外で遊ぶ』事は、ゆっくり熟睡したり、美味しい物を食べたりするのと同じ位、とっても大切な事だと私は思っています。

携帯性
私の遊具は全て、ポータブルで何度でも組み立てられます。森林、湖、海岸、砂浜、山道、ビルの屋上、裏庭‥様々な風景、場所、時間、季節、天気等々による独特な状況で遊べます。

重力
因みに「動」という字は重力と書きますが、校庭や公園の遊具は基本的に重力あってこその動きが生じます。鉄棒や滑り台等は遊具を使って自分だけが動くパターン、ブランコやシーソー等は自分と一緒に遊具の一部も動くパターン。物理学に基づく正確な重力の反動と、自然界のオルガニックな状況（例えばその時の風の向きとか地面の土の状態、自分の体力や気力とか）が調和する瞬間の単純な動きの『美しさ』に、私はいつも感心を覚えます。何故ならそれはまるで、極小さな花の蕾がひっそりと芽を出し始める時の生命力の様な、何か物凄く掛替えの無い物を目撃している気がするからです。宇宙には重力が無い事を考えると遊具で遊ぶ楽しみは、地球人ならではの特権なのかも知れません。
